Anglo-Saxon Period (449-1066) This period extended from about 449-1066, the year of the Norman-French conquest of England. The Germanic tribes from Europe who overrun England in the 5th century, after the Roman withdraw, brought with the Old English, or Anglo-Saxon language, which is the basis of modern English. They brought also a specific poetic tradition, the formal character of which remained surprisingly constant until the termination of their rule by the Norman-French invaders 6 centuries later. Achievements Poetry Much of old English poetry was probably intended to be chanted, with harp (a kind of instrument in Chinese means 豎琴) accompaniment, by Anglo-Saxon scop (poet in Chinese means 吟游詩人), often bold and strong, but also mournful and elegiac (sad) in spirit. Major achievement: Beowulf II. The Anglo-Norman Period (1066-1350) This period began from 1066, the year of the Norman-French conquest of England. The literature they brought to England is remarkable for its bright, romantic tales of love and adventure, in contrast with the strength and somberness of Anglo-Saxon poetry. Achievement Legend Arthurian Legend Ⅲ Geoffrey Chaucer (1340-1400) Geoffrey Chaucer: the “father of English poetry” and one of the greatest narrative poets of England Chaucer’s creative work vividly reflected the changes which had taken root in English culture of the second half of the 14th century. The Renaissance Period (1485-early 17th century) Literary Trends: Renaissance and Humanism The Renaissance marks a transition from the medieval to the modern world. Charles Dickens Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, Great Expectations, A Tale of Two Cities William Thackeray Vanity Fair Charlotte Bronte Jane Eyre Emily Bronte Wuthering Heights Thomas Hardy Tess of the d’Urbevilles Ⅸ 20th Century English Literature The century was a period of great artistic change, and is dominated by the impact of World War I (1914–18) and World War II (1939–45), as well as by the artistic concerns of modernism (which affected both themes and methods of writing). Literature Before 1950s Literary Traits: Modernism Modernism takes the irrational philosophy and the theory of psycho-analysis as its theoretical base. The major themes of the modernist literature are the distorted, alienated and ill relationships between man and nature, man and society, man and man, and man and himself. The modernist writers concentrate more on the private than on the public, more on the subjective than on the objective. They are mainly concerned with the inner being of an individual. Poetry: T. S.
