Zhuangzi 莊子 (Chuang-tzu) And the School of the Tao Zhuangzi Zhuangzi (莊子,"莊"is the surname, "子" is the polite saying of a man) lived and taught around 350 BC. He was a Taoist philosopher who wrote a book which is also called Zhuangzi (book). A story about Zhuangzi The Zhuangzi tells a story about two ministers who ask Zhuangzi to serve as a court official. Zhuangzi replies with a story about a sacred turtle. He says, "The king's men caught a sacred turtle. They killed it and put its shell in a special box to use to tell the future. Now would that turtle rather be honored in that box and dead, or would he rather be alive dragging his tail through the mud?" The Book of Zhuangzi (based on A.C. Graham) Ch. 1 – 7 (the “inner chapters” 內(nèi)篇): can be dated to the 4th century BCE Ch. 8 – 10: essays by an individual who was strongly influenced by the Laozi Ch. 11-15, 33: independent essays by Han scholars Ch. 16-22: writings of later followers of Zhuangzi, early Han The "Seven Inner Chapters" 內(nèi)篇 1. It’s full of helpful suggestion.” Differences in principles and beliefs Principles of Taoism Tao De , Wu wei . Principles of Confucianism Relationships, Loyalty, Humanity, The Gentleman and Rectification of Names. Principles of Taoism Tao: In English, Tao means road, pathway, channel or doctrine. But it is mainly believed to be the source of existence and non-existence. De (Te)): It is an active expression of Tao. De is inculcating the habit or imbibing the 'Tao'. Wu Wei: Wu wei literally means without action. It is the central concept in Taoism. It emphasizes that a human being's will must be in harmony with the universe. Similarities Both are two of China’s oldest and most pervasive philosophies. They arose during roughly the same period called the Hundred Schools of Thought. Both philosophies seek order and harmony in one’s life, relationship with society, and the universe. The lesson of Zhuang Zi’s view of life His articles were magnificent and unrestrained; His words were free and easy. He had seen through the fame and fortune even the life and death. The lesson of Zhuang Zi’s view of life In Zhuang Zi’s words, the most perfect stature of our lives was having a happy excursion between heaven and earth. Seeking for the stature Break loose the normal ties in our real lives Look around the world in the reverse thinking: treat the so called great events, as complaints in snails’ shells regard our independent soul as giant. Seeking for the stature It was said by Feng Zikai that there could be three kinds of stature in our lives. They are seeking for truth, going after beauty and being in pursuit of goodness. Seeking for the stature The second kind of life is aesthetic life. The most perfect stature is a kind of soul life. It is in pursuit of goodness. Seeking for the stature We all have the similar realistic life. However, the importance is not what kind of anchorage we have but what kind of our mind, and is not what kind of opportunity we have but what kind of our sense of worth. Feeling our lives Feeling our lives After we release ourselves from bustling stuff and thoughts, we can approach to the stature of happy excursion and live a better life though we don’t get those so called brilliant achievements. The happy excursion will give a pair of extraordinary wings to every ordinary life of us. Apperceiving the happy excursion Apperceiving the happy excursion At our 20th enter the society feel tired of going with dreams give up our dreams When we are 40th complain about our lives. 20years later hope to have some happy time Apperceiving the happy excursion Everybody of us is an individual, and also is a member of society. In Zhuang Zi’s opinion, we should cling to all the things. And the importance is clinging to our soul and hearts. Apperceiving the happy excursion At last, I hope that we all can get to the stature of happy excursion and have a happy life. [名言] 至人無己,神人無功,圣人無名。 [English] A perfect man does not hold himself in esteem; a godlike man does not expect any merit; and a sage pays no attention to renown/fame. [名言] 道隱于小成,言隱于榮華。 [English] Tao becomes obscured through the small comprehension (of the mind), and speech comes to be obscure through the vain-gloriousness (of the speaker). [名言] 君子之交淡若水,小人之交甘若醴;君子淡以親,小人甘以絕。 [English] Though as light as water, the relationship between gentlemen is of the kind that lasts long. Though as sweet as wine, that between mean men is easier to break. Apperceiving the happy excursion At last, I hope that we all can get to the stature of happy excursion and have a happy life.
