五月花號（Mayflower）并非第一艘從英國移民駛往北美的第一艘船只，但卻是英國移民駛往北美的一艘最為著名的船只。五月花號載重約180噸，長27米。以運載一批分離派清教徒到北美建立普利茅斯殖民地和在該船上制定《五月花號公約》而聞名。分離派是英國清教中最激進的一派，由于受英國國教的殘酷迫害，1608年8月離開英國到荷蘭。其中一部分教徒?jīng)Q定遷居北美，并與弗吉尼亞公司簽訂移民合同。1620年9月16日，在牧師布萊斯特率領下乘五月花號前往北美。全船乘客102名，其中，分離派教徒35名，余為工匠 、漁民、貧苦農(nóng)民及14名契約奴。11月21日，到達科德角(今馬薩諸塞州普羅文斯敦），于感恩節(jié)后第一天在普利茅斯地方上岸。在登陸前，即11月21日由分離派領袖在船艙內主持制定一個共同遵守的《五月花號公約》，有41名自由的成年男子在上面簽字。其內容為：組織公民團體；擬定公正的法律、法令、規(guī)章和條例。此公約奠定了新英格蘭諸州自治政府的基礎。gS4紅軟基地

　　公元1620年，一條本用來捕魚的小船悄然離開了英國港口，駛向了大洋彼岸的新大 陸。事實上，當他們離開港口時，許多老水手都懷疑他們是否能順利到達彼岸，因為這條船是條小船，此時又不是航海的好季節(jié)。但他們必須馬上揚帆啟程的原因是他們中間除了受宗教迫害的清教徒之外，還有著種種原因必須馬上離開不列顛的人們，包括破產(chǎn)者、流浪者等因各種原因在舊世界的游戲規(guī)則中找不到自己定位或無法實現(xiàn)自己夢想的人。船出發(fā)了，一共102人，經(jīng)過65天與風暴、饑餓、疾病、絕望的搏斗之后，他們終于看到了新大陸的海岸線，這時候，船反而停了下來，船上的成年男子在低聲討論著：我們將如何管理未來的新世界，依靠什么，領袖的權威?軍隊的威力還是國王的恩賜? 他們決定將這個問題弄清楚之后再上岸。討論十分激烈，有權參加討論的是船上41名成年男子，婦女們只有旁聽的份，最后，他們決定共同簽署一份公約，名為《五月花號公約》， 內容是：為了國王的榮耀，基督教的進步，我們這些在此簽名的人揚帆出海，并即將在這塊土地上開拓我們的家園。我們在上帝面前莊嚴簽約，自愿結為一民眾自治團體，為了使上述目的得以順利進行、維持和發(fā)展，亦為將來能隨時制定和實施有益于本殖民地的總體利益的一應公正法律、法規(guī)、條令、憲章和公職等，吾等全體保證遵守與服從。gS4紅軟基地
